Baidu’s “Aladdin” is a platform that accepts data in XML form for display above Baidu’s normal search results. This is an excellent tool for Baidu search engine optimization for websites that have authoritative data on certain subjects.
(Baidu) According to Baidu’s website, the poem “compares the search for a retreating beauty amid chaotic glamour with the search for one’s dreams while confronted by life’s many obstacles.”
Why Baidu SEO is Important
Search Engine Optimizers (SEO) will find a special challenge in trying to rank their articles on China’s premiere search engine, as it is very much different then Google’s.
Baidu is primarily Chinese language, and soon China will (if not already) have more native-speaking internet users then those who speak English. (InternetWorldStats) And of course, China is now a world superpower with a gigantic population of more than one billion people!
When it comes to Baidu, the SEO is entering into slightly different territory. Page ranking is different then Google’s, which is based on having relevant articles. Though it originates in a communist country, Baidu’s page ranking seems to be based on an entirely capitalist principle; he who invests the most money wins. Investing money on Baidu’s pay-per-click ad campaigns is probably the most reliable to method to rank high. (Arno)
A Problem With Censorship
Chinese government regulations cause Baidu to regularly censor content, and even has a special agency to seek out articles to be censored. (Wines) Because of this unfortunate reality, anyone interested in Baidu SEO should take heed of China’s internet regulations.
Some basic principles to follow are that China has a sort of firewall between global internet and its own. This has been affectionately called The Great Firewall of China. This is the first level of defense against unwanted outside influence. Here are some of the reasons China will censor an article:
1) inciting hatred or racism, or dividing the people’s solidarity
2) disrupting China’s policies on religious matters, or propagating cults and superstitions
3) insulting third parties (or libel)
4) trying to organize an illegal protest
5) attempting to conduct actions affiliated with an illegal civic organization
Because the task of censoring so much information is daunting, most censorship occurs by search engines themselves. That’s why it is technically Baidu that actively censors content, not the Chinese government.
